Reasons to #GetHullActive
Why we want to #GetHullActive
Coronavirus has challenged each and every one of us. Not only have we had to deal with the emotional impact of isolation, but the physical effects as well. Understandably, some people became more sedentary during lockdown and our region is already one of the most inactive in the UK. Physical inactivity is responsible for 1 in 6 UK deaths, the same as smoking. However, just standing or walking for 1-2 minutes every half an hour can reduce the health risks of sitting. So pause the TV before the next episode on Netflix and make a brew, or even better turn off autoplay and go for a walk!
For some, the lockdown and working from home provided time to focus on their personal health, with more people enjoying walking and cycling. Regular physical activity is far more powerful than any medication to improve health. From improving sleep, stress and supporting the immune system, to preventing and treating physical and mental health conditions, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, anxiety and depression.
Across Hull, people are being encouraged to make simple changes to move more, improve their energy levels and feel better. Just 5 minutes of physical activity has health benefits and it is possible to create good habits. Try associating a fun small level of physical activity with a regular moment in your daily routine. For example, pledge to do one star jump after brushing your teeth every day. Soon you will find yourself doing 5, 10 or even more! Then reward yourself in a way that makes you feel good. Just noticing that inner feeling of accomplishment after doing the activity can be rewarding. Or share your achievement with a friend or relative or on social media using #GetHullActive. Good luck!
